What
is Al-Anon?
Al-Anon
is a recovery program for the families and friends of alcoholics. We believe alcoholism is a family illness and affects many
people who have a relationship with the individual who drinks.
This may include the spouse, girlfriend or boyfriend,
parent, son or daughter, friend, coworker, grandparent, sibling,
anyone who is affected by someone else’s drinking.
Even if that someone does not believe he or she is an
alcoholic, - if the
drinking bothers you, you can go to Al-Anon.
We practice the 12 Steps of recovery, similar to Alcoholics
Anonymous’ 12 steps, and we help each other by sharing our
experience, strength and hope.
How
do I find a meeting?
You
can look on the Meeting Schedule page and find a meeting near you.
You can call the information line (316-266-8499) and someone
should return your call; they will give
you information regarding the program and a meeting to fit your
needs. You can also
call the contact number for one of the meetings on the meeting
schedule page for more information, such as directions.
Once you find a meeting time and place that suits you, just
show up!
What
happens at the meeting?
The
format of each meeting is somewhat different but most of the time,
it is just members sharing with each other.
We often read from Al-Anon literature and then comment on
what we have read and how it relates to us.
We keep the focus on ourselves, what is going on in our
lives and what we can do in a healthy way to make it better.
Usually each person shares in turn.
You may choose to
share or to pass - it’s
up to you. The meetings usually last for one hour. If you
don’t feel comfortable at the first group you attend, try
another. We encourage
all newcomers to attend at least 6 meetings before deciding whether
Al-Anon is for them; every group has its own personality and you
need to find one you feel comfortable attending.
Does
it cost anything?
No,
Al-Anon has no fees. We
do pass a basket at meetings for voluntary contributions; this
allows us to be self-supporting, which is an important principle in
our traditions.
Is
it a religious program? Is
it a professional program?
No
and No! Al-Anon is a
spiritual program; it is
not affiliated with any religion.
Members of any faith, or of no faith, can still find peace
and serenity within the 12 steps. Al-Anon is not a professional program; there are no
counselors or professionals giving advice.
We try never to give advice.
We share our stories and struggles with each other, work
the twelve steps, and read Al-Anon literature, and that’s
how we begin to change our lives.
What
if I don’t live with the alcoholic anymore?
Al-Anon
may still be for you. The
patterns of behavior developed from living with alcoholism can last
a long time. In fact,
many adult children of alcoholics have found a changed way to live
and enjoy healthy relationships by working the Al-Anon program.
There are some meetings that focus on Adult children of
Alcoholics; look for the notation “AC” on the directory.
What
if I still have questions?
Ask!!
Most members are more than willing to answer any questions at the
end of or after the meeting. Or,
if you are uncomfortable asking, just keep coming back.
The answers will come to you in time.
You will discover a new family, a group of people who
understand as no one else does and who already care about you, even
as you walk in the door.
